Assessment of the metal contamination evolution in the Loire estuary using Cu and Zn stable isotopes and geochemical data in sediments ArchiMer
Ferreira Araujo, Daniel; Ponzevera, Emmanuel; Briant, Nicolas; Knoery, Joel; Sireau, Teddy; Mojtahid, Meryem; Metzger, Edouard; Brach-papa, Christophe.
In this work, a multi-elemental approach combining Cu and Zn stable isotopes is used to assess the metal contamination evolution in the Loire estuary bulk sediments. Elemental geochemical data indicate an increase of metal concentrations from the beginning of the industrial period peaking in the 1990s, followed by an attenuation of metal contamination inputs to the estuary. Zinc isotope compositions suggest a binary mixing process between Zn derived from terrigenous material and multi-urban anthropogenic sources. Copper isotope systematics indicate a single natural dominant source represented by weathered silicate particles from soils and rocks. This work demonstrates the applicability of Zn isotopes to identify anthropogenic Zn sources in coastal systems,...

Brachidontes variabilis and Patella sp as quantitative biological indicators for cadmium, lead and mercury in the Lebanese coastal waters ArchiMer
Nakhle, Khaled; Cossa, Daniel; Khalaf, Ghaby; Beliaeff, Benoit.
The mussel, Brachidontes variabilis, and the limpet, Patella sp., were used as indicators to monitor cadmium, lead and mercury concentrations along the Lebanese coast. Studies were carried out in order to define the best strategy for assessing and minimizing the effects of size and physiological condition on the metal contents of the molluscs, and corrective models were constructed. Metal concentrations in surface water were measured to estimate bioconcentration factors (BCFs). The BCFs varied from 8.3 x 10(3) to 3.4 x 10(4), from 7.5 x 10(3) to 8.0 X 10(3) and from 3.0 x 10(4) to 3.2 x 10(4), for Cd, Pb and Hg, respectively. For limpets, BCFs varied from 1.7 x 10(4) to 7.4 x 10(4) for Cd, from 2.5 x 10(3) to 6 x 103 for Pb and remained fairly constant at...

Le mercure, le cadmium et le plomb dans les eaux littorales libanaises: apports et suivi au moyen de bioindicateurs quantitatifs (éponges, bivalves et gastéropodes) ArchiMer
Nakhle, Khaled.
In 1975, the meeting for the protection of the Mediterranean Sea in Barcelona fixed several important objectives. One of them was the creation of National Observation Programs in order to evaluate the levels and tendencies of pollutants. Furthermore the MED-POL program has re-evaluated and developed these objectives. Lebanon has signed the Barcelona Convention and has been engaged in providing data about its coastal water quality. Unfortunately the Lebanese war, which also began in 1975, paralyzed the country for 15 years. Since 1990, successive governments in the country have fixed as an objective the reconstruction of the tourism sector. As a consequence, they became interested in the environmental problems. The studies carried out before or during the...

Spatial and temporal variations in trace metal concentrations in surface sediments of the Marennes Oleron Bay. Relation to hydrodynamic forcing ArchiMer
Strady, Emilie; Kervella, Stephane; Blanc, Gerard; Robert, Serge; Stanisiere, Jean-yves; Coynel, Alexandra; Schaefer, Joerg.
Sediments quality assessment is of priority concern to provide a comprehensible overview of ecological and chemical state of an ecosystem. The Marennes-Oleron Bay, hosting the largest oyster production in France, is influenced by the historic polymetallic pollution of the Gironde Estuary. Despite, management efforts and decreasing emissions in the Gironde watershed, Cd levels in oysters from the bay are close to consumption limit (5 pig g(-1) dw. EC no. 466/2001). In this context, the aim of the study was to assess the priority metal (Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Ag, Cd, Hg, Pb and Th) concentrations in sediment within the Bay, by investigating spatial and temporal distribution variations and the role of hydrodynamic forcing. For that we selected three sites (east,...
